A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
